Update Regarding Centennial Meetings

Melissa Smith reported on the Centerville Centennial meetings that she has been attending. She distributed a flyer that lists the dates of the activities that have been planned from April 18th to August 21st.  May 17th will be the opening ceremonies at the Regional Center in North Salt Lake.

Melissa Smith explained pins are earned by participating in the different Centennial activities. Melissa would like to have the pins designed by local school children. There will be pins that have pictures of historic sites, people, and businesses in Centerville. The pins are lapel size.

3 on 3 soccer tournament. Lynn Keddington reported he has had a difficult time getting Jeff Emery, Athletic Director at Viewmont, to commit to a soccer tournament.  Lynn said he will continue to try to meet with Mr. Emery, and contact the principal.

Loren Pankratz and Jens Fillmore, Youth Council Liaison, will coordinate the tennis activity.

Pickle Ball and Disc Golf

There are no organized teams at the schools for these activities. It was suggested asking the Viewmont clubs or teams like the Vykelles, Band, Musical, Football or Lacrosse Teams to coordinate a pickle ball tournament.  Kyle Barney will oversee and coordinate the Pickle Ball activity with a sport group from Viewmont High School.  Bruce Cox, Parks and Recreation Director, said he will be the lea son for whatever group may want to coordinate a disc golf tournament fundraiser.

Rebecca Wright will be the coordinator for volleyball.

2 on 2 basketball

Chair Goff will be the coordinator for basketball.

Movie Festival

This will be similar to the Sundance Film Festival, where movies will be shown that are filmed by local residents. Tami Fillmore, City Council Liaison, previously suggested this activity where individuals who would like to make a short movie could show it at a movie festival. This item will be suggested to the High School to see if the students would be interested in making the movies.

Other Possible Events to Coordinate

Jens Fillmore, Youth Council Liaison, reported the Youth Council will sponsor a street dance at City Hall for the youth ages 12 to 18 on July 2nd at 9:00 p.m.

Melissa Smith suggested a Gold and Green Ball for the older adults in Centerville similar to what it was many years ago. If there are any of these people in the community, they could be asked to plan a night of ballroom and/or square dancing.

Movies for the Movies in the Park will be chosen at the March or April meeting.

The next Parks and Recreation Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the Administrative Conference Room at City Hall.

At 8:15 p.m., the meeting was adjourned.
